Product Description
A pair of steam locomotive fusible plugs made from bronze, these plugs were screwed into the crown sheet of the locomotives firebox. The plug is maze from Bronze and thouugh the center of the plug is a hole which is threaded to help retaing the lead which fills this space. The boilers crown sheet of the firebox must always be covered with water to keep the copper firebox from melting with the intense heat of the fire. Should the water level in the boiler be allowed to drop below the crown sheet this plug would instantly heat up and the lead melt thus spraying water and steam onto the fire. Wothout this device the crown sheet would buckle under the heat and pressure and the boiler could explode! One of these plugs has been cut through to show what it looks like, most likely from a enginemans school.
